World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-0 in straight sets and advanced to the semi-final of the Indian Wells Masters.
By India Today Sports Desk: Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka said that she was least bothered about her previous matches with Coco Gauff before their quarterfinal meeting in the Indian Wells. On Thursday, March 16, Sabalenka beat 19-year-old Gauff 6-4, 6-0 on Court 1 and advanced to the semi-final of the hard-court tournament.
Before Thursday’s quarters, Gauff had a 3-1 lead over Sabalenka on the WTA tour, but the latter showed her class and won in straight sets. Sabalenka was dominant to the extent that she didn’t face a single break point in the match, the first time for her this season.
“I didn’t really think about our previous matches. I feel a little bit different on the court this year. I feel like I’m a little bit different player. Yeah, I wasn’t really focusing on the last matches against her. I was focused on myself,” Sabalenka was quoted as saying after the match.
“I knew if I’m gonna bring my tennis on court today, that I’ll have all of chances to win this match. So super happy that I was able to show my best tennis today,” she stated.
Sabalenka is now set to lock horns with either Petra Kvitiva or Maria Sakkari in the semi-final. The 24-year-old reckoned that she needs to stay focussed during long rallies.
“It’s always tough battles against [Kvitova and Sakkari]. I think it’s going to be long rallies because of the court. I think if I’ll be able to bring my best tennis and I will be able to stay focused from the beginning until the end, I think, yeah, I can get this win,” Sabalenka added.
