IPL 2023: Josh Hazlewood to miss initial stage, Glenn Maxwell uncertain for RCB’s opener

IPL 2023: Australia’s Josh Hazlewood and Glenn Maxwell are unlikely to play in the RCB’s first match, with the former also missing the first set of matches.

By India Today Sports Desk: Royal Challengers Bangalore fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will miss the first two weeks of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, which begins on Friday in Ahmedabad. According to, Hazlewood is still hopeful of playing in the later stages of the T20 tournament.

Hazlewood is currently recovering from an Achilles injury that kept him out of India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy. According to the report, Hazlewood will consult with Cricket Australia’s medical staff before participating in the IPL.

Another significant development is that all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who missed Australia’s final two One-Day Internationals against India earlier this month, is doubtful for RCB’s opening game against Mumbai Indians on April 2 in Bengaluru due to a leg injury.

Maxwell, who broke his leg in a freak accident last November, found the return to ODIs “more demanding than he had expected,” according to Australia national selector George Bailey.

Wanindu Hasaranga will also be unavailable for RCB’s first two games. Due to international obligations, the mystery spinner will join the squad after Sri Lanka’s three-match T20I series against New Zealand concludes on April 8.

Due to an injury to all-rounder Will Jacks, RCB had to change their overseas personnel as well. Michael Bracewell has taken over for the England international. The RCB have begun training after the majority of the squad reported for camp in preparation for the RCB Unbox event.

For the first time since 2019, Royal Challengers Bangalore will begin their Indian Premier League 2023 season at their home stadium, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Faf du Plessis-led team is one of the few in IPL history to have never won the championship. Surprisingly, they open their season against the Mumbai Indians, the tournament’s most successful franchise with five titles.
