RCB v MI, IPL 2023: Can’t keep dwelling on Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, says Rohit Sharma after 8-wicket hammering

By India Today Sports Desk: Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma said the 5-time champions can’t keep thinking about Jasprit Bumrah’s absence as he urged other bowlers in the side to step up and deliver. Rohit was disappointed with Mumbai Indians’ bowling effort after they failed to defend 171 runs in their IPL 2023 season opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru on Sunday, April 2.

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis added a 148-run opening stand as RCB chased down the target with 8 wickets to spare and in just 16.2 overs. RCB flexed their muscles, smashing the Mumbai Indians bowlers across all parts of the ground.

Mumbai Indians banked on their overseas pacers Jofra Archer, Cameron Green, and Jason Behrendorff to deliver the goods in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out of the season due to a stress fracture.

However, Archer gave away 33 runs and did not pick up a wicket as he was carted around the ground by Virat Kohli, who top-scored for RCB with 82 from just 49 balls. Behrendorf gave away 37 runs in 3 overs while Green was belted for 30 runs in 2 overs.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla was the most economical of the MI bowlers with figures of 0 for 26 in 4 overs but Mumbai Indians were not able to trouble Kohli and Faf du Plessis (73 off 43 balls).

“From the last six to eight months I am used to playing without Jasprit Bumrah. Of course, this is a different setup but someone needs to put their hand up and step up. We can’t keep dwelling on it. Injuries are not in our control, we can’t do much about it. The other guys in the setup are quite talented as well. We need to give them that support. Just the first game of the season, there’s a lot to look forward to,” Rohit Sharma said after MI’s 8-wicket loss.

Rohit Sharma heaped praise on 20-year-old Tilak Varma who scored 84 not out from just 46 balls to single-handed give Mumbai Indians a decent total.

However, it was not enough as MI fell well short of what could have been a par score. Rohit pointed fingers at his batters for not stepping up in the season opener.

“He (Tilak) is a positive person, quite talented as well. Some of the shots he played, showed a lot of courage. Hats off to Tilak to get us to a competitive total. It was a good pitch to bat on. We didn’t set any target but we didn’t even bat to half of our potential and we got to 170. Probably 30-40 runs more would have been ideal,” Rohit added.

Mumbai Indians next face Chennai Super Kings on Saturday at home while RCB travel to Kolkata for their next clash on Thursday, April 6.
